A72 vs A53 processor core

Which is better snapdragon 650 or snapdragon 430 and why?

Snapdragon  processor

For performance and features-

Snapdragon 650

Because;

  1. Type of core: Snapdragon 650 employs both A72 and A53 core whereas 430 only incorporate A53 core. A53 can’t beat the sheer performance offered by A72 core, simply because:
  • A72 is a performance oriented core: A72 is a big core having more L1 and L2 cache, more complex circuitry (performance oriented microarchitecture)

  • OoO execution: A72 supports out of order execution ( may execute instruction in a different order for maximally utilising its ALU, FPU but requires a complicated circuit and special logic, moreover it is always turned on so uses more power but gives you more performance) whereas A53 do not support it (less performance).
  • pipeline length or depth: A72 has 15 stages pipeline whereas A53 implements 8 stages pipeline. So, A72 will have, virtually, 15 instruction at the same time in different stages all the time, whereas, A53 will be having only 8 instruction. Accordingly, A72 will be the first to finish executing instruction.

  • Branch predictor: A72 has more complicated and sophisticated branch predictor as compared to A53 core. This will bring higher cache hit and so higher performance.

2. Higher cpu clock speed: Snapdragon 650 has six core divided in two clusters using BIG.Little architecture where the bigger cluster (having 2 A72 core) can go upto 1.8 ghz and lower cluster (having 4 A53 core) can go to 1.4 ghz whereas 430 has eight core divided into two cluster having 4 A53 core each where bigger cluster can go upto 1.4 ghz and lower cluster can go only upto 1.2 ghz.

3. Better manufacturing process: Snapdragon 650 is built on 28nm HPM (high performance mobile) ,whereas, snapdragon 430 is built on 28nm LP (low power).
28nm HPM is the second-gen of 28nm technology , it provides less leakage and cpu’s built on this can be clocked to a higher clock rate as compared to 28nm LP.

4. Gpu: snapdragon 650 has adreno 510 gpu whic can go upto somewhere around 525 mhz (not disclosed by qualcomm but it is above 500 mhz and less than 550 mhz) that is better than adreno 505 present in snapdragon 430, which can go only upto 450 mhz. Adreno 510 has Maximum On-Device Display Support
  • 2560x1600
  • Quad HD
  • WQXGA
Whereas, Adreno 505 has Maximum On-Device Display Support
  • 1080p Full HD
  • 1920x1200
  • WUXGA
Maximum External Display Support
  • Up to 1080p

5. Higher memory clock speed: snapdragon 650 can support LPDDR3 memory upto 933 mhz, whereas, snapdragon 430 can support LPDDR3 only upto 800 mhz (i.e., if you use 933 MHZ LPDDR3 RAM on snapdragon 430 it will only work upto 800 MHZ).

6. Better LTE modem : snapdragon 650 houses ‘x8 LTE modem’ that support LTE Category 7 speed (downlink) and has peak download speed of 300 mbps and 100 mbps respectively, Whereas, 430 houses ‘x6 LTE modem’ that support LTE Category 4 speed (downlink) and has peak download speed and upload speed of 150 mbps and 75 mbps respectively.

7. 4k video recording and playback: snapdragon 650 supports 4k video recording (3840 x 2160 ) @ 30fps and only 1920 x 1080 @ 120 fps and 4k video playback whereas 430 only supports full hd (1920 x 1080) video recording @ 30fps and full hd playback.

For energy efficiency and Low cost-

Snapdragon 430

Because;

1) Better battery life: A53 core are high-efficient cores that offer maximum performance per watt. They will give you more battery (as compared to A72) mainly because of:
  • In-order execution (in-order execution uses less battery but brings less performance as compared to OoO)
  • Lesser processing power (so uses less power)

2) Lower price: A53 core are less than half the size of A72 core so they take up very less space on silicon die space and thus reduce the cost of manufacturer and so of the customer.

3) Availability: A53 cores are less complex to manufacture as they do not have OoO and have fewer pipeline stages. This reduces time and cost of the manufacturer and so ultimately of the customer. SOC’s just sporting A53 core have higher time to market (TTM).
